How was this project funded? How can I make a contribution?
The urgency to respond exactly one month after September 11th has made it difficult to fully fund this project. Contributions of any amount would be greatly appreciated. Checks may be written out to "Gallery @ Green St." as a tax-deductible donation. Please be sure to make note of The Hope. Project in the memo line. Contributions can be mailed to :

What is this project about?
This project is about enabling people to make an action, to be visible and to not be silent. In the past few weeks we've all felt varying degrees of wanting to "do" something but not knowing how or what. People involved with this project have been encouraged at every level to make it their own and to make it personally meaningful.

Why "Hope"?
We encourage people to find out what "Hope" means to you. We feel like "Hope" is looking forward, and it's open for people to project their own meaning. "Peace" and "Love" are fine words too, but they are words that have been branded by the 60's. We are a generation without a war and therefore we are without a language for what is happening around us. "Peace" and "Love" seem to be dilute as symbols of what we are feeling. We need new language.

Couldn't the money have been spent on something more useful?
If the flow of funding were dictated in this way we would live in a world without art. This is not a new question and it has been raised time and time again in terms of funding of the arts, space exploration, and types of scientific research. This is not a world we want to live in. We live in a world of symbols and images as well as a world of food and shelter. We must generate alternate and persistent symbols and images to the ones the media provides in order to have a habitable world - as well as provide food and shelter.

Who should we send the postcard to?
Send the card to anyone who needs it. This could be a politician, your grandmother, a friend.

Who is the pilot?
East Coast Skytypers, a commercial skywriting company.

Where did the plane take off from?
Marine Air Terminal, La Guardia Airport, New York

Is it smoke/gas? What is it?
Skywriting is a single plane at an altitude of about 10,000 feet emitting a biodegradable trail of vapor to form letters and symbols in the sky. A single skywriting letter is 2,400 feet tall - that's the size of two Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other. Skywriting is so large that it can be seen in excess of 40 miles away.

Is it going to happen again?
If funded, the project will happen in New York, Washington DC, and Shanksville, PA over the next 3 months. The project will continue to grow and change.

How did you get permission for this?
No special permission is needed. The plane flew in Class B airspace. At the time of the flight these planes were restricted to fly outside of a 20 mile radius of Logan Airport.
